The Relationship That Showed Me Myself

I went through a breakup that changed me.
We were together for three years. And if I’m honest, I knew from the beginning that I wasn’t ready for the kind of relationship he was ready for. He wanted something real, something grounded, something lasting I wanted those things too – but I wasn’t capable of showing up for them yet.
That was the truth I didn’t fully accept.
His pattern was staying when he shouldn’t have. Mine was staying when I knew I couldn’t fully give what I said wanted to give. And in that space, we both ended up hurting – him, me and the version of us that could have been something healthy under different circumstances.
But this relationship gave me something I didn’t have before: awareness.
It showed me my fears – of commitment, of vulnerability, of being fully seen. It showed me how I abandoned myself, even while trying to build something with someone else.
I learned that wanted something is not the same as being ready for it.
I wanted to be a wife.
I wanted to be a great mother.
I wanted to be successful and grounded and whole.
But underneath those desires were layers of fear, defense, and coping mechanisms I hadn’t yet faced. I wore masks. I kept my guard up. I didn’t know how to let love in without protecting myself from it all the same time.
And that contradiction cost both of us.
I think one of the hardest parts is knowing that he may have felt like I didn’t choose him – that I couldn’t get there for him. And while there’s truth in that, it’s not the whole truth. I didn’t choose him in the way he deserved…but it wasn’t because I didn’t want to.
It was because I didn’t yet know how to choose myself.
I’ve been grieving this for eight months.
Some days, I still cry all day. Not just because I lost him – but because I see how I lost myself in the process. Because I see how I brought someone into a space I hadn’t yet healed.
And there’s a deep sadness in that.
But there’s also something else emerging – something quieter, but stronger.
Responsibility
Clarity
Growth
I’m starting to understand that this grief isn’t something to fix or rush. Its something to move through. And maybe all this time, I wasn’t grieving wrong, I was just trying to avoid the full weight of the sadness.
Now I’m beginning to let myself feel it.
Fully.
I don’t know exactly where I’m going yet. But I know it will be somewhere better than where I was. I know I’m becoming someone more honest, more aware, and more capable of real love.
And maybe that’s what this was all for.
To break me open.
To show me myself.
To give me the chance to choose differently next time.
I’m still in it. Still healing. Still learning.
But for the first time, I feel like I’m finally stepping through the doorway – letting go of trying to understand everything, and starting to simply accept what was.
And trusting that what comes next will be built on something real.
Have you ever wanted something you weren’t ready for?
